ToP® Approaches to Environmental Scanning

Understand reality before you plan for it.

One day. Ten proven approaches. A "recipe book" of tools you'll use again and again.

ToP® Training / ToP® Approaches to Environmental Scanning

Organizations that skip environmental scanning end up planning for the world they wish they were in, not the one they're in. Before your group can plan for the future, they need to understand their history, the current dilemmas they're facing, and the shifts happening in their larger environment.

Why This Course

Ten approaches. One recipe book.

Environmental scanning is how you build the shared context a group needs before strategic work begins — quickly, honestly, and in a way the whole group can act on. But one size doesn't fit all. Different situations call for different approaches.

In this one-day course, you'll explore 10 creative, insightful ways to assess customer, staff, or community perceptions and needs, delve into relevant data, and get groups on the same page before the planning starts.

You leave with an extensive "recipe book" of techniques you can use immediately — and the judgment to choose the right approach for the specific situation in front of you.

What You'll Leave Able to Do

Concrete skills. Ready Monday morning.

You don't just leave with notes. You leave with specific capabilities you can use in the meetings and processes you're already leading.

Choose the right scanning approach for the specific situation.

Customer feedback, staff climate, community needs, environmental trends, or data interpretation — different situations call for different approaches.

Design and lead group assessments that surface what's actually happening.

Not what people wish was happening. Honest scanning is the foundation of every meaningful plan.

Build shared context across your team or stakeholder group.

Before strategic work begins. The single highest-leverage move in any planning process.

Connect external forces to internal decisions.

So planning is grounded in current reality — not in the assumptions the group walked in with.

Common Questions

Asked & answered.

What's the difference between environmental scanning and a SWOT analysis?+
A SWOT is one type of environmental scan — and often a relatively shallow one. The 10 approaches in this course span a broader range: stakeholder interviewing, trend analysis, customer pattern reading, community-based assessment, data sense-making, and more. SWOT is a tool inside the toolbox; AES gives you the full toolbox.
Do I need to take ToP® Facilitation Methods before this course?+
Yes — or Focused Conversation, or Focused Conversation Online. This course builds on foundational facilitation skills rather than teaching them. See ToP® Facilitation Methods.
How is this different from market research or formal program evaluation?+
Market research and formal evaluation typically produce reports for someone else to read. ToP® environmental scanning produces shared awareness inside the group that needs to act on it — so the insight gets used, not filed.
Can I use these methods on my own team, or do I need an outside facilitator?+
You can use these on your own team. The methods are designed to be teachable — that's the whole point of the course.
Does this qualify for continuing education credits?+
Yes — hours vary by credentialing body. See the registration details for the specific cohort, or reach out and we'll send the current numbers.
Is this offered virtually?+
Public cohorts are delivered in person. In-house cohorts can be delivered virtually if needed.
What's included in the price?+
The official ToP® Approaches to Environmental Scanning manual, one hour of coaching with one of your course trainers (scheduled within 90 days), and ongoing access to the Great Plains ToP Community of Practice.
